Fresh air systems for commercial kitchens

A fresh air system supplies outside air to your kitchen to replace the air your exhaust hood removes. It has its own ducting and blower, and spreads the air through the kitchen with room diffusers.

We plan it together with the exhaust hood, the gas line and fire suppression, as one kitchen layout.

The basics

What is a fresh air system?

A fresh air system is the supply half of a kitchen’s ventilation. Your exhaust hood pulls heat, smoke and grease out over the cooking line, and that air has to be replaced from somewhere. A fresh air system brings it in from outside, so the kitchen is not left starved of air.

In a commercial kitchen it is built from fresh-air ducting, its own blower and room diffusers that spread the air across the different zones of the kitchen. It is the counterpart of the exhaust system, and we plan the two together.

How it works

How a fresh air system works in a kitchen

Two paths, one balanced kitchen: air out over the cooking line, fresh air in.

  • 1. The hood exhausts

The range hood, the exhaust ducting and a centrifugal blower remove heat, smoke and grease from over your cooking line.

  • 2. Fresh air comes in

A fresh-air duct with its own blower brings outside air in, integrated into the hood and distributed through room diffusers.

  • 3. Diffusers spread it

Square louvered diffusers spread the air across the different zones of your kitchen.

  • 4. The two stay in step

Because the exhaust and the fresh air depend on each other, we plan them as one system, around your cooking line and your layout.

  • Planned with the exhaust

The hood, the exhaust ducting and the fresh air are laid out together. See exhaust and fresh-air systems.

  • Planned with the rest of the kitchen

The gas line and fire suppression are laid out with them, as one kitchen. See kitchen fire suppression and commercial kitchen fit-outs.

  • Site assessment and layout

We assess your site, customise the system to suit your kitchen and prepare drawings.

  • Installation and commissioning

We deliver, install and commission the system on site.

Questions and answers

Fresh air system questions

What is a fresh air system in a commercial kitchen?

It is the air supply that replaces what the exhaust hood removes. Fresh-air ducting and a blower bring outside air into the kitchen, and room diffusers spread it across the kitchen’s zones.

Why does a kitchen with an exhaust hood need a fresh air supply?

The exhaust removes air from the kitchen, and that air has to be replaced. Without a supply, the kitchen is left starved of air and the exhaust has to work against it. That is why we plan the exhaust and the fresh air as one system.

What does your fresh air system include?

Fresh-air ducting with its own blower, integrated into the hood, and square louvered diffusers that spread the air through the kitchen. We assess your site, prepare the drawings, then deliver, install and commission the system. See exhaust and fresh-air systems.

How much is a fresh air system for a commercial kitchen?

Every system is designed for your site, so it is quoted after a consultation and site visit. Tell us about your project and we will come back with a quotation. For a larger project, send us a full project brief.

Do you install it, and is there a warranty?

Yes. We design, fabricate, deliver and install, then commission everything on site. Service and support continue after handover. We give a 6-month service warranty on our equipment and work. Full-kitchen projects also include 12 months of preventive maintenance service (PMS) with KitchenShield™.
